Abstract:
We have developed a switchable surface based on liquid crystal and polymer composite film (LCPCF) whose surface tension is switchable due to the orientations of liquid crystal molecules anchored among the polymer grains. The surface model of LCPCF is discussed. The droplet on LCPCF can be also manipulated because of distribution of wettability on LCPCF. Many photonic applications of LCPCF are also developed, such as a reflective display which is polarizer-free, color-filter-free, and bistable, lenses whose focal length is electrically tunable, and phase modulators. In addition, the bio-applications of LCPCF are also developed, such as sperm testers, triglycerides testers, high-density lipoproteins testers and blood testers.
Biography:
Prof. Yi-Hsin Lin received her BS degree in physics from National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) in 1998, MS in Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU, Taiwan) in 2000, and Ph.D. in Optics from College of Optics and Photonics: CREOL & FPCE, University of Central Florida in 2006. After graduation, she joins the Department of Photonics and Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering of NCTU. Prof. Lin is a recipient of Glenn H. Brown Prize awarded by International Liquid Crystal Society (ILCS) in 2008, the 2006 OSA New Focus/Bookham award, 2005 Newport Research Excellence award, 2005 SPIE Educational Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering, and several other awards. She has published ~50 journal papers. Several papers were selected as cover pages or feature articles in Physical Review Letters and Optics Express. The research interests of Prof. Lin are in physics of liquid crystals (LC), LC-based optical devices, and bio-sensing based on a liquid crystal/polymer system.
