Title: An Examination Of Collaborative Problem Solving In NASA’s
Mission Control Center
Abstract: Problem solving for NASA’s Mission Control Center
(MCC) specialists often requires large, multidisciplinary, and distributed
teams to work collaboratively to solve complex problems. This research effort
was conducted in order to provide some insight into the team problem solving processes
occurring in ISS Mission Control. Transcripts of collaborative problem solving
were analyzed in the context of a model of macrocognition in teams. This
presentation first describes the theoretical foundation upon which our analysis
is based. It then details the methods of analyzing the transcripts, results
found from the analysis, and several notional training approaches directed towards
Mission Control Specialists in training team level problem solving processes.
