50 FLORIDA COMPANIES TO BE HONORED

Florida Companies to Watch Event Celebrates

Companies that Create Growth and Foster Innovation

Awards Event Recognizes Companies That Positively Impact Florida’s Future

ORLANDO, Fla. (December 17, 2010) – Fifty companies from 18 Florida counties have earned a place in Florida’s inaugural class of “Companies to Watch.”The accolade, presented by GrowFL, the Florida Economic Gardening Institute at the University of Central Florida and ACG Florida, in association with the Edward Lowe Foundation and funding support from The Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development, recognizes the state’s privately held businesses that employ up to 99 employees and have between $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue or capital.

“Firms like these named ‘Companies to Watch’ continue to be the catalyst that is fueling Florida’s emergence from a turbulent national economy,” said Randy Berridge, President of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. “Congratulations to this exemplary group of Florida businesses that continue to invest in their communities and create new jobs in all corners of our state.”

The “Florida Companies to Watch,” which were named after evaluating more than 310 nominations for the awards, represent industries ranging from alternative energy development to food production and industrial gear makers to information technology firms. The combined impact of the fifty chosen companies is $423 million in total annual revenue; 1,972 full-time equivalent employees and 510 new net jobs created compared to 2009. From 2006 through 2010, these companies generated $1.4 billion in revenue and added 1,153 employees (both in Florida and out of state), reflecting a 162 percent increase in revenue and 141 percent increase in jobs for the five-year period. That translates into a 32 percent annual revenue growth and 28 percent annual growth in employees.

With major sponsorship support from the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, the Florida Business Incubation Association, Fowler White Boggs, P.A. and the University of Central Florida, the “Florida Companies to Watch” awards program is an initiative developed by the Cassopolis, Mich.-based Edward Lowe Foundation. The foundation hosts similar programs in Michigan, Indiana, Colorado, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. Additional sponsors include Gulf Power Company, Nperspective, Osceola County Economic Development Department and the University of South Florida.

The fifty “Florida Companies to Watch” will be honored at the awards celebration on February 17 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. Tickets for the ceremony and dinner are still available and may be purchased online at www.florida.companiestowatch.org or by calling Lynn Aitken at 407-823-6384.

“Florida Companies to Watch takes a whole-business approach, identifying companies across the state that represent Florida’s future, not just major metropolitan areas,” says Dr. O’Neal. “It shows the economic potential of the entire state as demonstrated by the successes of second-stage companies. Being selected for the Florida Companies to Watch awards program provides growing businesses the credibility and recognition that distinguish them among their competitors. This statewide event lauds the success of business leaders who have taken their operations to the "second-stage" of growth and hold the potential to continue to create new jobs in their communities and industries, thereby making a difference in regional communities.”

In addition to the recognition of being named a Florida Companies to Watch award winner, companies have the opportunity to participate in a leaders retreat attended by former Companies to Watch award recipients from other states at the Edward Lowe Foundation’s Big Rock Valley retreat facility in southwestern Michigan.

Valencia Graphics Portfolio Reviewer Invite

it is quickly approaching that time when students who have made it this far in their portfolio review course have their final "right of passage": their portfolio review evaluation by industry professionals. i know that most of you just enjoy volunteering, however i should mention
we've got quite a few 'rock stars' in our midst this semester, so if you're in need of a rock star, you'll want to be reviewing portfolios so you can snatch them up before someone else does!

although, the students have made it this far, they have not yet passed the course and cannot yet get their degree unless the evaluators give them a passing grade for their portfolio, resume, self-promo and interview (50% of their final grade!). you can expect me to schedule you to meet with approximately 5 students -- each for about 30 minutes per student. evaluation forms and a schedule will be provided upon your arrival, however i've attached a PDF of the evaluation form so you can see what is involved.

we'll need as many volunteer reviewers, preferably with a graphics background, as possible to ensure each of our students gets evaluated by a minimum of two reviewers. if this is something that you or any other qualified coworker/colleague would like to do, please:

1. respond to this post letting us know your interest by Wednesday, December 1st.

2. please let us know if you prefer to interview students with print or web/interactive portfolios (or possibly both).

3. finally, if you could please provide me with your current job title, mailing address, web address and contact information so that students have an opportunity to send thank you cards as well as research your company prior to the interview.

this semester's portfolio review is scheduled for MONDAY, DECEMBER 6TH at 5:45pm - 9:15pm on valencia's east campus in 5-112 (a room hidden behind the cafeteria). sandwiches, snacks and drinks provided. please, let me know if you have any diet restrictions.

for those of you who are new to finding valencia, here is a campus map
and driving directions: http://valenciacc.edu/AboutUs/locations/east_campus.cfm

i look forward to hearing from you by december 1st!

  • EBITDA for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 improved to a loss of $261,000 compared to a loss of $382,000 in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.
  • Cash on hand as of September 30, 2010 was $1.35 million as compared to $1.46 million on June 30, 2010.
  • Gross margin was 37% for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 as compared to 43% for the first quarter of fiscal 2010.
  • Net loss for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 was approximately $853,000 compared to a loss of approximately $706,000 for the first quarter of fiscal 2010.
  • Unit shipment volume in precision molded optics increased 11% in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 compared to the same period of last year.

Jim Gaynor, President and Chief Executive Officer of LightPath, commented, "During the first quarter, our revenues rose 45% over the same quarter in the prior year. Our cost of goods sold also increased by $539,000 due to volume and product mix change. Unit shipment volume in precision molded optics continued to show improvement in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 compared to the same period last year. Gross margin decreased to 37% as a result of the product mix change and an under absorption of the fixed overhead costs. EBITDA was a loss of $261,000, however, this represents a $121,000 improvement over the loss of $382,000in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.”

Gaynor continued, “The first quarter of our fiscal year is typically the lowest revenue quarter for LightPath due to the summer vacation period in Europe and seasonal slow period for several of our major customers. We are also in the process of transitioning our business to focus on providing low cost, high volume lenses for products, such as laser levels, range finders, gun sights and projectors. We are addressing multiple markets such as industrial tools, biomedical instruments, communications and imaging with a focus in Asia.”
