The Growth and Form of Micro-Organisms

Abstract:

The growth of filamentary cells such as fungi, bacteria, root hairs, and pollen tubes has been a long-standing topic of interest to microbiologists for several centuries. Although there are many fundamental differences in the structure, life cycles, size, and function of these diverse cells, their growth dynamics and structural morphology share many common features. In this talk I will describe a variety of biomechanical and geometrical approaches to modeling the growth and form of such organisms. While these models can provide realistic descriptions they also raise fascinating questions concerning the way in which one can incorporate growth into the framework of continuum mechanics.
