The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program FY 2012 Solicitation is open. The Phase I solicitation will close on March 2, 2012. SBIR is a competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in federally funded R&D opportunities that have the potential for commercialization.

The workshop will focus on optical fiber communications networks, key components and markets. Current status and future trends in optical fiber communications will be discussed in both invited presentations and a panel discussion featuring the speakers. Workshop topics are described below.

Markets – The status and forecast of the markets for fiber optic equipment and components will be reviewed. Emphasis will be on market drivers that provide impetus to system deployments and component demand.

Networks – The most recent developments in telecommunications networks ranging from long haul to fiber to the home will be discussed. In long haul networks, topics for discussion include: recent & planned network deployments, economics of current and future 100 Gb/s systems, and key technological challenges and new research trends. In access/FTTH networks new architectures, network economics, and customer penetration will be discussed.

Components – Key technologies for long-haul and metro systems and status of commercial devices and research results for 10, 40 and 100G applications, both for transmit and reconfiguration will be discussed. Additionally, in view of the tremendous research activity in integrated photonics in China, the workshop will feature a talk that summarizes the current status of integrated photonics research in China.

Abstract:
Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Organic Lasers (VECSOLs) are the counterparts of VECSELs with organic solid-state gain materials, i.e. dye-doped polymer thin films or organic semiconductors. They combine the well-known properties of VECSELs (high conversion efficiency, excellent beam quality, power scaling capability, high versatility offered by the open cavity) with the key properties offered by organic thin films : low cost, ease of fabrication (by high-throughput processes such as spin coating, potentially ink-jet printing on large areas), broad emission spectra (typ. 100-nm wide) offering a high potential for wavelength tunability, easy chemical tuning (from near-UV to near-IR), and high gain. With a simple structure consisting of a plane highly-reflective mirror onto which a thin film of Rhodamine-640-doped PMMA layer was spin-cast and a concave output coupler closing the cavity, pumped by the second harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, 7 ns, 10 Hz), we achieved a record conversion efficiency of 60% with a diffraction-limited output at 620 nm. The open cavity allowed us to perform intracavity frequency doubling and obtaining a deep-UV laser continuously tunable from 309 to 322 nm, with 2% efficiency, in a very compact setup (1-cm long). Dynamical numerical simulations based on Statz-DeMars equations revealed that the very high gain cross sections (~10-16 cm²) combined to the short lifetime (~ns) of organics make the device performance highly dependent on cavity length and pump pulse duration. Photobleaching issues which are common to all organic solid-state lasers will be discussed.

Abstract:

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) is the arm of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) that focuses exclusively on the far term. Across the Air Force there is a shared vision of dominating air, space, and cyber. The AFOSR vision and mission have the unique feature of focusing on revolutionary, transformational basic research, producing today’s breakthrough science for tomorrow’s Air Force. In addition to supporting AFRL in-house basic research, AFOSR provides over $300M/year in funding to over 200 leading U.S. universities. This presentation describes the strategy that underlies AFOSR investment in basic research and the broad technology areas in which its investment is focused. Examples of leading edge basic research will be provided and funding mechanisms will be described.

Biography:

Dr. Thomas W. Hussey is the Chief Scientist of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), located in Arlington, VA. AFOSR is the Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) responsible for executing the Laboratory’s basic research portfolio. Dr. Hussey is a member of the scientific and professional cadre of AF senior executives and is responsible for assuring the quality of AFOSR research and advising the Director on future emphasis for funding priorities. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. Dr. Hussey joined the Air Force Weapons Laboratory in 1975 as an active-duty AF officer and was responsible for the theoretical and numerical modeling of high-energy-density z-pinch plasmas for nuclear weapons effects simulation. He was first to quantify the effect of non-linear Rayleigh-Taylor instability on fast, hollow-core z pinches. He left the Air Force in 1979 and joined Sandia National Laboratories where he worked on a number of high-energy-density plasma problems, including z pinches, x-ray lasers, cathode plasma formation and evolution, hohlraum physics, and high-current-density electrodes. In 1991, Dr. Hussey joined the Phillips Laboratory, a predecessor organization to AFRL, to stand up a group responsible for the numerical simulation of high-energy-density plasmas. That group has subsequently been instrumental in developing and distributing, both inside and outside DOD, a series of plasma physics simulation codes. In 1995 he took over management of a division with responsibility for high-power microwave (HPM) source and pulsed-power development. From 1997 to 2000 he was a program manager for a customer-directed HPM effort and initiated development of a one-on-one engagement model effort for HPM electronic attack. In 2000 he was promoted to ST, named Senior Scientist for HPM Plasma Science, and served as Technical Advisor for the HPM division. In 2006 he was named Chief Scientist of AFOSR.

Abstract:
In this talk I will discuss certain symmetries in the Fourier spectrum of speckle from smooth surfaces and the effects these symmetries have on image speckle contrast. The cases examined are bright-field imaging, dark-field imaging, and single-sideband imaging.

Biography:
Joseph W. Goodman received the A.B. Degree in Engineering and Applied Physics from Harvard University in 1958, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1960 and 1963, respectively.

From 1958 through 1962, he was a Research Assistant in the Stanford Electronics Laboratories. During 1962 and 1963, he was a post-doctoral Fellow at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment, under the auspices of the Royal Norwegian Society for Scientific and Industrial Research. He returned to Stanford in 1963 as a Research Associate, a position he held until 1967. In 1967 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1969 and to Professor in 1972. In 1988 he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and named the William E. Ayer Professor of Electrical Engineering. In 1996 he stepped down as Chairman and assumed the position Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs in the School of Engineering . For the duration of the Summer of 1999, he was the Acting Dean of Engineering. Prof. Goodman assumed Emeritus status on January 1, 2000.

Biography:

Robert R. Alfano, Distinguished Professor of Science and Engineering at The City College of the City University of New York, is a pioneer in the application of light and photonics technology to the study of biological, biomedical and condensed matter systems and a leader in inventing and using novel light sources as well as developing ultrafast laser spectroscopic techniques. His contributions to the field of photonics over the past 30 years of his professional career are documented in over 700 research articles, 108 patents, several edited volumes and conference proceedings, and well as over 10,000 citations. His research achievements include pioneering contributions in discovering new tunable Cr³⁺/Cr⁴⁺ lasers, developing laser spectroscopic and biomedical optical spectroscopy and imaging techniques for noninvasive, pain-free detection and diagnosis of diseases. He has received his Ph.D. in physics from New York University. Received OSA Charles Hard Townes Award in 2008 for supercontinuum discovery and tunable laser development and recently the 2012 SPIEs Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award .

Abstract:

Simulating the evolution of a non-relativistic quantum mechanical particle in a periodic potential by propagating an optical wave packet in arrays of evanescently coupled waveguides has received continuous and increasing attention in recent years. It is thereby a common belief that the use of optical waveguides as a model system for quantum mechanics carries the intrinsic drawback of being limited to non-relativistic phenomena and that the observation of optical analogues of relativistic phenomena requires subwavelength structured media like photonic crystals or metamaterials.

In my presentation we will give an overview on the recent progress of simulating the evolution of relativistic wave packets in a classical optical system. Specific focus is thereby given on (1) planar superlattice waveguide arrays and (2) honeycomb photonic lattices – also called photonic graphen, that allow the classical simulation of the relativistic Dirac equation.

OIDA Workshop: Opportunities and Trends in Optoelectronic Manufacturing

The North American optoelectronics industry has undergone significant changes over the course of the last decade. The escalating end-user demand for bandwidth coupled with the attendant pricing pressures continues to pose significant challenges to the industry. To stay competitive, the industry has addressed this challenge by off-shoring optoelectronic component and board level packaging and assembly. Recently, the US Government has announced a string of initiatives in manufacturing to facilitate development of advanced manufacturing technologies as well as to provide impetus to growth of jobs.

The goal of this one day industry-centric workshop is to determine what manufacturing technologies and business incentives are needed to facilitate manufacturing, and to delineate topics of technology focus in optoelectronics that might be used to address government manufacturing initiatives.

The first part of the workshop will feature talks from experts in the industry (public & private companies), academia, and the financial community discussing their perspectives on optoelectronic manufacturing. This will be followed by presentations from leaders representing agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Photonics21 (European technology platform for photonics), National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Research Council of Canada discussing their initiatives/programs in optoelectronic manufacturing. There will be a panel session featuring the speakers following this.

The second part of the workshop will feature talks from industry and government experts delivering technology focused presentations of relevance to optoelectronic manufacturing. Topics to be covered range from advanced device design and fabrication technologies to advanced packaging and assembly technologies for next generation photonic devices.

Abstract:

The response time of liquid crystal displays is still inferior to the existent competing technologies, such as plasma display panels (PDP) or organic light emitted diodes (OLED). The target LC cell response time for a field sequential color (FSC) and 3D displays should be less than 1 ms (240 Hz frame frequency) to provide a high resolution, low power consumption and extended color gamut liquid crystal displays (LCD).

Fast electrooptical modes in nematic LC, such as optically compensated birefringence (OCB), no bias bend (NBB) or stressed splay twist (SST) modes do not seem to be very helpful to meet the new requirements for FSC and 3D display applications. Some hope still exists, when the double cell configurations are used.

One of the candidates for fast switching LC materials is a blue phase. However, these materials still suffer a relatively narrow temperature range, too high applied voltage and a hysteresis in the electrooptical response.

Another candidate is a flexoelectric mode in short pitch cholesteric LCs. The mode shows a high dependence of the response on the LC alignment quality as well flexoelectric LC modules, which are mostly responsible for the high contrast ratio and fast switching time.

Fast switching ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) displays (FLCD) is a good candidate for the new generation of field sequential color (FSC) and 3D LCD, which proved to be better in response time, especially deformed helix ferroelectric (DHF) mode and its modifications, which provide a high contrast, and extremely fast switching time for a very low applied voltage.

Biography:

Prof. Chigrinov is a professor in ECE Department, HKUST, Hong Kong. He is an expert in Flat Panel Technology in Russia, recognized by World Technology Evaluation Centre, 1994. He is also a member of Editorial Board of "LIQUID CRYSTAL TODAY", an associate editor of J. SID, and a SID fellow. He has published 4 books, 17 reviews and book chapters, 186 journal papers, 420 conference presentations and 69 patents and patent applications in the field of liquid crystals and displays since 1974. He also gave several short course lectures and tutorials in conferences hold by SPIE and SID. The paper of M.Schadt, K.Schmitt, V.Kozenkov, V.Chigrinov, Surface-induced parallel alignment of liquid crystals by linearly polymerized photopolymers, Jap. J.Appl. Phys. P.I., Vol.31, pp. 2155-2164 (1992) is number 4 among the most heavily-cited and have been influential papers published in JJAP since the first volume (1962) and have been selected from the various fields of applied physics by the JJAP Editorial Board (http://www.ipap.jp/highlights/jjap.html).

Abstract:

Nanoporous (also called mesoporous) silica is a rich class of self-assembled nanocomposite materials with a well-organized uniform pore structure. When optically active molecules are physically encapsulated in the pores, it creates a material with rather non-trivial photonic properties, or “photonic nanocomposite” for short.

In this talk, I describe the basic principles of the synthesis of these materials to demonstrate the reach family of obtained shapes. The synthesis can be tuned to make a large variety of shapes, from films to particles of complex topology. The particle size can be made as small as 3 nm and as big as thousands of microns. This material can have rather non-trivial photonic properties. For example, nanoporous silica particles can have unusually high (“ultrabright”) fluorescence, abnormally large Stock’s shift, rather complex spectra, etc. For comparison, nanoparticles of this material can be substantially brighter than quantum dots (compared to water dispersible quantum dots of the same size). The described material allows embedding a broad family of dyes and other compounds due to the simple physical nature of encapsulation. It allows creating “smart” photonic composite, the material that changes its optical properties depending on the external stimuli. Finally, I will discuss the very prospective biomedical applications of the nanoporous silica particles.

Biography:

Sokolov received his undergraduate training at St. Petersburg State University, Russia (B.S., 1984) and his graduate training in the Russian Bureau of Standards (Russian NIST), Ph.D. at 1991. After his postdoctoral training in the University of Toronto, he joined the faculty at Clarkson University in 2000 as an Assistant Professor in Physics. His current positions are Professor of Physics, Professor of Chemistry and Bimolecular Science, NY Center for Advanced Material Processing (CAMP) Professor, and the Director of the Nanoengineering and Biotechnology Laboratories Center (NABLAB).

His research interests are related to the study of photonic and mechanical properties of nano- and bio- composite materials, bio sensors for biology/medicine, and light-energy conversion, etc. His research has been supported by federal and state agencies, industry. The awards include E.L.Ginzton International Fellowship Award from Stanford University, Soros Research Award, Awards from Ministry of Education of Japanese Government, etc. He has 120+ refereed publications (2500+ citations), 29 patents issued and pending, 100+ invited lectures, seminars, conference presentations; participation in 100+ conferences with contributed presentations. He has supervised 15 graduate, and 11 undergraduate students; graduated 11 MS. and Ph.D. students, trained 7 postdocs.

Abstract:

Photonics is a driver for technological innovation and is one of the most important key technologies in the 21st century. Spectral sensing, simply described as the measurement of the reflected, transmitted, or emitted spectrum of something is an important aspect of the “photonics toolbox”. Spectral sensing provides tremendous leverage in many new applications such as improved energy efficiency, advanced manufacturing, product authentication, improving health care and prevention and homeland security applications. Often times spectral sensing is utilized in ways not readily apparent or obvious at first glance. This talk will describe the technology breadth and plethora of applications being enabled by today’s spectral sensing products and offer a vision to future applications being enabled by tomorrow’s spectral sensing solutions.

Biography:

Dr. Eichenholz serves a dual role as the CTO of Ocean Optics and as the Divisional Technology Director for Halma’s Health Optics and Photonics Divisions which includes Labsphere, Fiberguide, Ocean Thin Films, Avo Photonics, Keeler, Riester and Volk Optical is responsible for technology scouting and advising for those organizations. As Ocean Optics’ CTO, Dr. Eichenholz is charged with maintaining its technology and product leadership position in the optical sensing and spectroscopy markets. He is responsible for all aspects of internal and external research, as well as new product and applications development activities. He oversees Ocean Optic’s product development roadmaps and product development process. He also developed the new Blue Ocean Grants open innovation program that is funding more 20 external research programs around the world.

Dr. Eichenholz is actively involved in photonics research, product development and the commercialization of photonics technology.

He written and delivered approximately 50 papers and talks at conferences and in refereed journals in the areas of spectral sensing, spectroscopy, fiber optics and solid state, ultrafast, and frequency-agile lasers. He has multiple internal and external research program ongoing in the areas of new spectrometer designs, MEMS devices, upconverting coatings, patterned dichroic thin film coating, oxygen and pH sensors, and multispectral imaging.

Dr. Eichenholz served as the principal investigator for Air Force and DARPA STTR's and SBIR's and holds six US Patents on new types of solid-state lasers, displays and photonic devices.

Dr. Eichenholz is a senior member of SPIE and OSA and has served on multiple leadership and technical committees for those societies. He also served as a board member for the Florida Photonics Cluster and is on the editorial advisory committee for Laser Focus World and SPIE Professional magazines.

To stay competitive, the industry has addressed this challenge by off-shoring optoelectronic component and board level packaging and assembly. The i2 Mentor Network is a statewide network of "been there, done that" technology entrepreneurs that have founded and raised capital for their own companies. Our mentors have collectively raised over $300 million for their own companies, and will work with you to prepare your company (team, financial statements, business plan, sales/marketing strategy and much more) for the capital raising process. The i2 team has a network of angels, venture capitalists and pre-seed funding resources within our i2 Ventures Network to accelerate the connection of great companies to Florida's investment community.

Two mentoring sessions will be held in 2012, with starting dates of January and April. The most promising companies from each i2 Accelerator session will be invited to participate in the annual Igniting Innovation Showcase, which will be held in September 2012. The i2 showcase attracts investors, mentors and industry partners from all over the country, and has a $100,000 grant award for the most promising presenting company. The winning company will be selected by attending venture capitalists based on revenue growth potential within five years and the ability to create a return for investors.

We are very excited to hold our 15th meeting of the Southeast Ultrafast Conference (SEUFC) there at the University of Central Florida in the new Physical Science building on January 12th -13th, 2012. We have a great program with distinguished speakers from research institutions across the southeast, headed by plenary speaker, John Fourkas from the University of Maryland. Abstract:
The author will discuss the function of ultrashort pulse lasers (USPL) in Army research, primarily in the Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD). A general overview will be given concerning the functions of the US Army Research Lab (ARL) and interactions with the Army Research Office (ARO), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and the Multi-University Research Initiative (MURI). The overview will then move to specific areas of investigation in WMRD by the author and colleagues including propagation through obscurants, filament ablation and electron density characterization. The overview will conclude with a discussion on viewpoints that have gained interest in the Defense community and future opportunities.

Biography:
Dr. Anthony Valenzuela completed his PhD thesis in 2005 from the University of Michigan on the topic of UV and XUV generation from interacting free electrons accelerated by relativistic ultrashort pulse lasers (USPL) and intense lasers pulses. His post-doctoral work at Los Alamos National Lab centered on optical diagnostics of laser ablation of thin metal films, using Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) and Shack-Hartmann interferometry. Subsequently, Dr. Valenzuela began work for the US Army Research Lab on optical design and USPL-based plasma filaments diagnostics.

Abstract:

Silicon Photonics is no more an emerging research topic but is an actual technology with commercial products already available on the market. Quantum confinement of carriers or spatial localization of photonics allow to dramatically enhance and widen the scope and potential of silicon photonics.

After a review of silicon photonics where the state of the art is presented, the optical properties of silicon reduced to nanometric dimensions are introduced. The use of Nano-Si in silicon photonics (waveguides, modulators, switches, sources and detectors) is reviewed and discussed. Recent advances of Nano-Si devices such as bio-imagers, optical resonators (linear, rings, and disks) are treated. The development of high efficiency light emitting diodes for interchip bidirectional optical interconnects is presented as well as the recent progresses to exploit Nano-Si for solar cells. In addition, non-linear optical effects which enable fast all-optical switches are described. On the other hand, confinement of photons to small microresonators allows tuning the photon properties. Here also novel effects are found. Ultra high bandwidth robust optical switches for UDWDM, active suspended microdisk bistable devices, nonlinear optical generations are only few applications where nanophotonics can be appreciated.

Biography:

Lorenzo Pavesi is Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Trento (Italy). Born the 21st of November 1961, he received his PhD in Physics in 1990 at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale of Lausanne (Switzerland). In 1990 he became Assistant Professor, an Associate Professor in 1999 and Full Professor in 2002 at the University of Trento. He leads the Nanoscience Laboratory, teaches several classes at the Science Faculty of the University of Trento. He founded the research activity in semiconductor optoelectronics at the University of Trento and started several laboratories of photonics, growth and advanced treatment of materials. He is the president and founder of the IEEE italian chapter on Nanotechnology. He has directed more than 20 PhD students and more than 20 Master thesis students. His research activity concerned the optical properties of semiconductors. During the last years, he concentrated on Silicon based photonics where he looks for the convergence between photonics and electronics by using silicon nanostructures or photon confinement.

Abstract:

Optical and electronics properties of nanocrystals can be tuned by controlling the size and composition, and in some cases the assembly of nanoparticles. Luminescent properties can also be obtained, both in nanosize and in bulk, by doping with lanthanides. Such properties can be used in the design of photonics devices for different application. Here in this talk we will present resent results about down- and up-conversion luminescent properties of oxide and semiconductor nanocrystals for solid state lighting, tunnability was also demonstrated and open the possibilities to be used for biolabeling. Nanocrystals were covered with a silica shell and functionalized to improve selectivity for biomedical applications. It is also discussed the use of quantum dots and oxide nanocrystals in solar cells, and metallic nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Visible and near infrared emission was obtained with lanthanide doped soft glasses based on P2O5 and TeO2 and the feasibility for laser emission is discussed.

Dr. De la Rosa Cruz received a Doctor in Science (Optics) from the Centro de Investigaciones en Optica in 1998. His research focusses on the linear and non-linear optical properties of nanomaterials including oxide, semiconductor, and metallic nanoparticles for photonics applications. His interests also include ceramic crystals for laser devices, displays, solid-state lighting, solar cells, biosensors and biomedical applications as well as soft glasses activated with lanthanides and nanocrystals for fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Abstract

The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique has substantial interests for elemental analysis of materials in hostile environments. It is relatively simple to implement in various configurations, it does not require any sample preparation, it is fast and above all, it can be used at remote distance. For these reasons the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has been working on LIBS for two decades, initially for the nuclear sector, and now on different applications which necessitate in situ or online measurements.

In the first part of the seminar, we will give an overview of LIBS activities at CEA, especially on nuclear and micro-LIBS applications. In the second part we will focus on particular research topics of our department. We will present our work on i) in situ analysis of liquid sodium purity to improve the safety of fast nuclear reactors, ii) application of LIBS to nanoparticles measurements for online process control and nano-safety purposes, iii) remote LIBS for qualitative and quantitative analysis of Martian rocks (ChemCam project).

Abstract:

Transparent optical ceramics were invented in the U.S in the 1960’s. At that time, the optical quality of ceramics was lower than other optical materials. These ceramics were called translucent ceramics and have been now used for lighting applications for a long time. However in principle, ceramics have several advantages compared with single-crystals and optical glass if their optical quality can be improved. In the past decade many researchers have been working toward the development of highly transparent ceramics. Nowadays many transparent ceramics with high quality have been developed, and are used for many applications, such as lasers, scintillators ,windows and transparent armor.

Dr Yagi is internationally known as an expert in this field and since the early 1990’s has been developing several different transparent ceramics (YAG, LuAG, sesquioxides..) for photonic applications. In this seminar he will summarize the many different aspects of the fabrication, physical and optical properties of transparent ceramics.

Abstract:

Broad tunability in the mid-IR (~3-12 μm) is desirable for a number of applications. Daylight Solutions has built a number of External Cavity quantum cascade Lasers (ECqcL™) that maximize tuning range from the quantum cascade chip. As much as 525 cm-1 of pulsed and 121 cm-1 of cw, mode hop-free tuning has been obtained. Various mechanisms for the broadening of the gain of the QC chip are considered. High Power QCLs are also a major area of development producing platforms with up to 15 Watts optical output in the MWIR range.

Biography:

Dr. Timothy Day is a cofounder of Daylight Solutions and serves as the CEO and CTO for the company. Daylight Solutions is an advanced manufacturer of molecular detection and imaging products, serving markets that include Industrial Process Control, Medical Diagnostics and Defense and Security using Mid IR lasers and sensor systems. Dr. Day concurrently serves as the executive manager for Daylight Defense, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daylight Solutions, established to serve the Defense and Security markets. While at Daylight Defense, he and his team have introduced several EO/IR products that serve the U.S. military in areas such as directed infrared countermeasures, stand-off detection of explosives, laser aiming/designating, combat ID, free-space secure communications and other applications. Dr. Day has over 20 years' experience in both technical and business management in the photonics industry. He has led engineering, research, product development, manufacturing, and marketing operations. He started his career as a cofounder of New Focus, where he served from 1990 through 2004. During his time at New Focus, he was involved in all aspects of the company’s history, concluding with his work on the sale of the company to Bookham Technology PLC for $338M. While at New Focus he also contributed to the raising of over $500M though public and private equity offerings. From 1990 to 2009, while at New Focus and Daylight Solutions, Dr. Day has developed extensive patent and product portfolios and transferred numerous products into production, both onshore and overseas.

Dr. Day holds both a BS and an MS in Physics from San Diego State University and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Abstract:

Two recent research works conducted by the applied laser spectroscopy group (ALS) at NILES will be presented. Though the two works are in two different fields (one is an industrial application while the other is in Cultural heritage) but in both we have made use of the molecular bands in the obtained LIBS spectra.

The first work it has been focused on studying evolution of the cyanide (CN) and carbon (C₂) molecular spectral emission lines in the laser induced breakdown spectra of lubricating oil as a function of its consumption. The intensities of these molecular bands have been taken as indicator of engine oil degradation at certain mileage. The results proved that it is possible to have a direct, straightforward and easy method for prediction of lubricating oil degree of consumption. This may facilitate scheduling the proper time and/or mileage intervals for changing the oil to avoid any possibility of engine failure.

In the second work human calcified tissue samples of recent and archeological bones have been studied via the LIBS technique. The old samples were from three different ancient Egyptian dynasties. Elements normally used to study dietary habits (Sr, Ba, Al, and Pb) were analyzed and the interferences of postmortem or diagenic effects due to the burial place were investigated via LIBS analysis of soil samples taken from the same locations where the archeological bones have been buried. Study of CN and C₂ molecular bands in the obtained LIBS spectra of the bones revealed that these bands have strong intensities in recent bones spectra contrary to the archaeological ones. This is attributed to the degradation of the tissues and has been confirmed by following up calcium to phosphorus ratios in different bone samples.

UCF COMMUNITY WITH CENTRAL FLORIDA ENTREPRENEURS

Networking Event Sharpens Entrepreneurial Skills

(Orlando, FL) - The University of Central Florida is pleased to announce that the nationally recognized Invention to Venture (I2V) workshop is coming back to Orlando for the eighth consecutive year. The Invention to Venture program offers students the opportunity to learn essential entrepreneurial thinking skills and network with inventors and entrepreneurs.

The Center for Entrepreneurship (CEI) with the help of the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance brings Invention to Venture to the University of Central Florida. The event is scheduled for Friday, November 18, 2011, from 8:00 am to 4:00pm at the Fairwinds Alumni Center at UCF. I2V is a program of the NCIIA with sponsorship from the Lemelson Foundation and the Kauffman Foundation.

Invention to Venture is designed to help students, faculty and industry leaders tap into the untouched entrepreneurial resources. The Orlando workshop allows attendees to gain information on business formation, networking, service providers, and financing sources. Abstract:

Silicon Photonics is no more an emerging research topica but is an actual technology with commercial products already available on the market. Quantum confinement of carriers or spatial localization of photonics allow to dramatically enhance and widen the scope and potential of silicon photonics.

After a review of silicon photonics where the state of the art is presented, the optical properties of silicon reduced to nanometric dimensions are introduced. The use of nano-Si in silicon photonics (waveguides, modulators, switches, sources and detectors) is reviewed and discussed. Recent advances of nano-Si devices such as bio-imagers, optical resonators (linear, rings, and disks) are treated. The development of high efficiency light emitting diodes for interchip bidirectional optical interconnects is presented as well as the recent progresses to exploit nano-Si for solar cells. In addition, non-linear optical effects which enable fast all-optical switches are described. On the other hand, confinement of photons to small microresonators allows tuning the photon properties. Here also novel effects are found. Ultra high bandwidth robust optical switches for UDWDM, active suspended microdisk bistable devices, nonlinear optical generations are only few applications where nanophotonics can be appreciated.
