Hole-like Fermi surfaces in electron-doped cuprates

The phase diagram of high-temperature superconductors, e.g.,cuprate superconductors, has been scrutinized for symmetry with respect to doping. While large efforts have been taken to shed light on 
the so-called hole-doped side of the phase diagram, the electron-doped side has been investigated with much less rigidity. In particular, while superconductivity is induced solely by chemical doping in hole-doped cuprates, doping alone is insufficient to induce superconductivity in electron doped cuprates. Besides, an additional annealing procedure is inevitable for the induction of superconductivity in those cuprates. Moreover, while the copper ion is five- and/or six-fold coordinated in hole-doped cuprates, it is square-planar for electron doped cuprates. Here we show that superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates can be induced even in the absence of chemical doping. This allows us to see the phase diagram of high-temperature superconducting cuprates under some new light.

Mr. Breeze brings to LightPath Technologies over 30 years experience in sales, marketing and business development, including significant direct experience in the infrared, advanced technical materials, and optical markets. He previously held executive level business development and technical sales positions in finished infrared optical components and lens assemblies which are integrated into multiple-sensor camera systems for defense, security, reconnaissance, and commercial applications. Most recently, he was Director of Sales and Marketing for Ophir Optics (now Newport Corporation (NASDAQ: NEWP), where he was primarily responsible for the sales growth of the US division of Ophir Optics.

Infrared systems include applications such as thermal imaging cameras, gas sensing devices, spectrometers, night vision systems, automotive driver awareness systems such as blind spot detection, thermal weapon gun sights, and infrared counter measure systems, among others.  LightPath has proprietary manufacturing and material technology to manufacture molded optics that fit these applications.  For example, utilizing precision molded aspheric optics significantly reduces the number of lenses required for typical thermal imaging systems, and the cost to manufacture these lenses, as compared to traditional methods.

Title: Two Classes of Exoplanets Identified Without Modeling

Abstract:

The Spitzer Space Telescope has measured numerous eclipses of exoplanets, and ground-based telescopes and Hubble are now getting into the game.  These measurements give the planetary flux in the observation filter.  In combination with the planetary radius, known from transit, one can determine a brightness temperature, Tb.  I compare these Tbs with the planets' predicted equilibrium temperatures, Teq, calculated assuming zero albedo and uniform reradiation of absorbed energy from the entire planetary surface. Measurements deviate from the simplistic Teq prediction because of the chemistry and temperatures present in the atmosphere, but other effects like clouds may play important roles as well.  By comparing Tb and Teq, and without reference to any interpretive model, I have identified two distinct classes of exoplanets, with cooler exoplanets having similar Tb and Teq while hotter exoplanets have higher Tb than Teq.  I will discuss possible explanations, such as thermal inversions, clouds, and competing radiative and convective time constants.

Abstract:
Telecommunication systems routinely generate, capture and analyze data at rates exceeding billions of bits per second. Interestingly, the scale of the problem is similar to that of blood analysis. With approximately 1 billion cells per milliliter of blood, detection of a few abnormal cells in a blood sample translates into a “cell error rate” of 10-12, a value strangely similar to the bit error rate in telecommunication systems.
Motivated by WDM and time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technologies, a new type of bright-field imaging known as STEAM has demonstrated imaging of cells with record shutter speed and throughput leading to detection of rare breast cancer cells in blood with one-in-a-million sensitivity. A second technique called FIRE is a new approach to fluorescent imaging that is based on wireless communication techniques. FIRE has achieved real-time pixel readout rates one order of magnitude faster than the current gold standard in high-speed fluorescence imaging.
Finally, a new physics-based signal transformation will be introduced and demonstrated. It enables a digitizer to capture signals that would otherwise be beyond its bandwidth and at the same time, it compresses the digital data volume. This method is inspired by operation of Fovea centralis in the human eye and by anamorphic transformation in visual arts. The so-called Anamorphic Spectrum Transformation makes it possible to (i) capture high-throughput random signals in real-time and (ii) to alleviate the storage and transmission bottlenecks associated with the resulting “big data”.
Biography:
Prof. Jalali is the Northrop-Grumman Endowed Chair in Optoelectronics and Professor of Electrical Engineering at UCLA, the Director of Department’s Physical and Wave Electronics, with joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering, California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) and Department of Surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Columbia University in 1989 and was with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey until 2002 before joining UCLA. He is a Fellow of IEEE, the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the American Physical Society (APS). He is the recipient of the R.W. Wood Prize from Optical Society of America for the invention and demonstration of the first Silicon Laser, and the Aron Kressel Award of the IEEE Photonics Society, and the Distinguished Engineering Achievement Award from the Engineers Council. In 2005 he was elected into the Scientific American Top 50, and received the BrideGate 20 Award in 2001 for his entrepreneurial accomplishments. He has published over 300 journal and conference papers, and holds 11 patents. During 2001-2004, he was a consultant at Intel Corporation’s optical and wireless communication divisions.

LightPath Technologies Announces The Exercise of Warrants

Cash Balance Projected to Nearly Double

ORLANDO, FL - August 7, 2013: LightPath Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: LPTH) (the “Company”, “LightPath” or “we”), a global manufacturer, distributor and integrator of proprietary optical components and assemblies, today announced that 776,418 warrants which were previously issued were committed for exercise into common shares during the months of July and August of 2013.  The Company received aggregate gross proceeds from these exercises to total approximately $1.22 million.
As previously disclosed, cash on hand as of June 30, 2013 was approximately $1.57 million, which was an increase of 12% as compared to approximately $1.40 million on March 31, 2013.  The aggregate proceeds from the warrant conversions have increased the Company’s cash position to greater than $3.00 million. 
Following the exercise of the aforementioned warrants, the Company’s issued and outstanding ordinary share count will be approximately 13.74 million ordinary shares.  Four members of the Company’s management team and Board of Directors exercised warrants into common shares increasing their ownership percentage. 
“The exercising of warrants demonstrates the confidence shareholders, particularly our management team and members of our Board of Directors, have in our growth prospects, as well as serve to significantly strengthen our balance sheet.  We are grateful for this continued support and look confidently toward the future,” said Jim Gaynor, President and Chief Executive Officer of LightPath.  
LightPath has an additional 2.55 million warrants at a weighted average exercise price of $1.43 (exercise prices ranging between $0.87-$3.20) relating to capital transactions since fiscal 2009. The warrants have expiration dates through December 2017.
