Norman Tolk

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN 37235

Abstract:

Multiple ultra-fast laser pulses, phase-correlated spatially and/or temporally, can be applied to a material system to coherently interact with phonons and electrons in a non-equilibrium manner. One approach is to selectively, remotely and non-thermally create coherent acoustic phonon (CAP) waves, which travel to an isolated thin layer or array of quantum structures to be studied. Additional laser pulses are timed to correlate temporally, spatially and in phase with the coherent phonons as they arrive at a layer of interest in order to either characterize the material or electronically modify it. Recent advances in the application of this approach to semiconductor heterostructures will be discussed including measurements of semiconductor point defect concentration profiles.

Biography:

Norman Tolk was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He earned his AB degree in physics from Harvard College in Cambridge Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. degree in atomic physics from Columbia University in New York City. Following a postdoc at Columbia, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey where he carried out experimental research on surface and interface physics using directed-energy photon and particle beams.

In 1984, he move to Vanderbilt University as a full Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He also became an Adjunct Professor of Physics at Fisk University. Early in his carreer at Vanderbilt, he headed the highly multidisciplinary group representing medicine, engineering biology and physics that wrote the successful proposal to fabricate a Free-Electron Laser (FEL) at Vanderbilt, following which he became acting director of the newly formed FEL center. This initiative resulted in the construction of a new building on the Vanderbilt campus solely dedicated to FEL research. In 1987 Dr. Tolk received the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award which provided the opportunity to perform research at the Free University in Berlin which happened to coincide with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Professor Tolk recently served as Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate and on an annual basis conducts performances of Handel’s Messiah which is a community event involving many Vanderbilt and community musicians.

Dr. Tolk is a Fellow of The American Physical Society, holds 8 patents, and is the author or co-author of 3 edited books and more than 260 papers. His research involves non-linear laser-surface and laser-interface interactions, ultra-fast vibrational and electronic vibrational processes at surfaces and interfaces, spin dynamics, desorption induced by electronic and vibrational processes, and atomic collision physics.

Gooch & Housego introduces new imaging photometer

The Life Sciences and Instrumentation division of Gooch & Housego has announced that it will be entering into an agreement with TechnoTeam Bildverarbeitung GmbH (Germany) to distribute their exciting LMK imaging photometer (luminance measuring camera) systems in North America. The LMK series of imaging photometers and its innovative user-driven application software excels at a wide variety of challenging light measurement applications. Coupled with TechnoTeam's integrated automated goniometer, it can be used for near field measurements of angular and spatial distribution of extended sources in high growth applications, such as LED luminaires and automotive lighting, which would be otherwise impossible in test facilities where space is at a premium. Seminar: “Photon-Counting Laser Rangefinder” – Andreas Eisele, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Seminar: “Photon-Counting Laser Rangefinder” – Andreas Eisele, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

CREOL 102

Monday, April 4, 2011 / 2:30-3:30pm

Andreas Eisele

Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics (IPQ), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

Abstract:

Handheld, lightweight laser rangefinders provide distance measurements with millimetric precision and distances up to several hundred feet via the time-of-flight method. The time-of-flight to a target and back can be measured either directly or indirectly by evaluating the phase of an intensity modulated laser beam. To achieve millimeter distance resolution, roundtrip times have to be resolved with an accuracy of a few picoseconds. As the application is focused on non-military use in civil engineering, construction and DIY, a low-cost system is crucial. Photon counters integrated in CMOS technology allow for cost and size reduction over current systems based on avalanche photodiodes and high precision optics.

Biography:

Andreas Eisele studied Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (B.S. equivalent 2007). He received his Master’s degree in Optics from the University of Central Florida, USA in 2008, where he spent time with the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL) on a Fulbright scholarship working on OFDM in Optical Fiber Communications. Currently, he is working towards his PhD as a research assistant at Robert Bosch GmbH and the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics (IPQ) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His present research interest is focused on laser optical measurement and photon counters. Further interests include German and European Patent law.

PR: LIGHTPATH TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPS ADDITIONAL DIRECT-TO-CHINA SALES CHANNELS

LIGHTPATH TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPS ADDITIONAL DIRECT-TO-CHINA SALES CHANNELS

-- Adds two New Distributors to Expand China Market Presence --

Orlando, FL: March 24, 2011: LightPath Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: LPTH), a global manufacturer, distributor and integrator of optical components and assemblies, announced today that it has continued the expansion of its direct selling channels in China as part of its strategy to deliver high volumes of aspheric lenses and laser delivery systems to Asian manufacturers of optical equipment. Based on the adoption rate of aspheric lenses in multiple market segments in China, the market for aspheric lenses in Asia is expected to top $280 Million by the end of 2011. LightPath’s molded aspheric lenses provide cost sa vings over traditional high volume spherical doublet and triplet lenses without sacrificing performance.

The Company has signed two new distributors to create comprehensive market coverage in China. LIENHE Corp (www.lienhe.com.cn) and ETSC (www.etsc-tech.com). Both of these distributors are based in China and provide LightPath with new, valuable selling channels into specific targeted market segments that capitalize on increased demand from Chinese manufacturers. The addition of these two distributors extends the company’s sales channels in China to six distributors covering several different market segments and complements our direct sales forc e.

Jim Gaynor, CEO of LightPath, commented, “LightPath continues to successfully execute a growth strategy that addresses specific high volume target markets in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
