ABSTRACT:
The rapid progress of nanoscale science and technology challenges the optoelectronics community to develop ever smaller lasers and other optoelectronic devices compatible with the general technological trend in size reduction. This has led to the lasing demonstration of a single semiconductor nanowire of ~ 100 nanometers in diameter and a few microns in length, or plasmonic lasers with sub-diffraction-limit dimensions. In this talk, I will present many unconventional features of lasers at nanometer scale including smallest size, strong waveguiding, large confinement factor, giant model gain, and world-record wavelength tunability of ~200 nm using nanowires or plasmonic shells. We will show that a metal coated semiconductor core can achieve lasing threshold despite significant metal loss. Our recent experiments on such metal-coated semiconductor wire/pillar structures will be presented, showing examples of smallest lasers ever made and strong evidence of surface-plasmonic lasing. Throughout the talk, I will also try to address the issue of the smallest limit of a nanolaser and show how familiar concepts and principles and understanding of lasers must be modified at nanoscale.

BIOGRAPHY:
Cun-Zheng Ning is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Affiliate Professor of Physics and Materials at Arizona State University. He obtained his PhD in Physics from University of Stuttgart, Germany and was a Research Assistant Professor at University of Arizona till 1997 when he joined NASA Ames Research Center as a Senior Scientist and later as Nanophotonics Group leader and Nanotechnology task manager at NASA Ames Center for Nanotechnology till 2006. He was a ISSP Visiting Professor at University of Tokyo in 2006. He has published over 130 papers and given over 90 invited talks and colloquia. He has served many international conference as Chair or Committee member including those by IEEE (CLEO/IQEC),SPIE, and OSA. He was Associate Editor of IEEE J.
Quantum Electronics (2001-2003) and a special topic editor for IEEE J.
Special. Topics in Quantum Electron, J. Opt. Soc. Am., Optics Express, etc.

U.S. Airborne Laser Scores 1st Successful Missile Kill

(Source: AIA)The U.S. Missile Defense Agency said Friday that a high-powered airborne laser shot down a ballistic missile during its boost phase, the first successful test of the futuristic technology. Boeing is the lead contractor, with contributions from Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. "The revolutionary use of directed energy is very attractive for missile defense, with the potential to attack multiple targets at the speed of light, at a range of hundreds of kilometers, and at a low cost per intercept attempt compared to current technologies," the MDA said. California Group Approves PG&E Contract Including Space-Based Solar Power

(Source: CPUC)The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved a renewable energy contract for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), furthering the state's progress towards its renewable energy goals. Through its power purchase agreement with Solaren Corporation, PG&E is entitled to generation from a first-of-its kind space-based solar project. The experimental technology uses orbiting satellites equipped with solar cells to convert the sun's energy into electricity, which is then converted into radio frequency energy that can be transmitted to a local receiver station. Space-based solar power has been researched in the U.S. for several decades and this summer the Japanese government announced plans to pursue a space-based solar program. Click here for more. (2/12)

Florida Gov. Wants $100M for Innovation Incentive, $32.6M for Space Florida

(Source: SSTI)Replenishing the Innovation Incentive Fund and investing in space industry, public research, and green energy technologies are among Gov. Charlie Crist's FY11 budget recommendations to grow the state's innovation economy and establish Florida as a pre-eminent global hub. The governor's budget includes $100 million for the Innovation Incentive Fund, which was established in 2006 to attract R&D companies and create high-wage jobs. The fund was depleted in 2008.Space Florida would receive a total $32.6 million, of which $20 million is slated for business recruitment activities in order to provide the necessary resources that align with a new national approach to space exploration, according to budget documents. To provide financing for new and expanding space businesses, the governor recommends $10 million. Another $3.8 million is set aside for general operations, $3.2 million for workforce development, and $3 million to fund targeted projects for business development and recruitment.The remaining $12.6 million is slated for development and management of facilities for space industry businesses. This funding would be used for investment in Exploration Park, a 60-acre technology and commerce park, to refurbish Launch Complex 46, a multi-use commercial launch facility, and to provide for the renovation of facilities for use by entities fulfilling NASA and Air Force contracts. LightPath Technologies Sees Increasing Demand and Revenue from Aspheres for Industrial Laser Tools

Based on customer feedback on LightPath Technologies’ shipments of molded aspheric lenses to multiple large OEM manufacturers, LightPath is seeing growth in its strategic consumer and industrial laser tools market segment.

(February 16, 2010) Orlando, FL. LightPath Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: LPTH -News), is seeing increasing demand in the strategic market of molded aspheres for consumer and industrial laser tools. Current open orders for these products are valued over $1.8M with more than 25% growth anticipated over the next several quarters. SPIE Seeks Volunteer Judges for Local Science Fair

SPIE is looking for a volunteer judge to select winners for SPIE's Optics and Photonics Awards at the California State Science Fair. Judging will take place on Saturday, February 20, 10 am to 2 pm, at the Seminole Towne Center Mall in Sanford.

SPIE will be awarding three cash prizes and certificates for best projects in optics and photonics where students apply optics or photonics related technology, techniques, or principles.

Please let me know if you are available to volunteer judge for SPIE's Optics & Photonics Science Fair Awards. The time commitment is small and this is a great opportunity to interact with some extremely talented kids.

URGENT: your help needed for Proposal for Phase 1 Matching Grants &Seed Funding

As outlined below, the Florida Senate is considering a bill for some substantial funding for SBIR Phase 1 matching grants and also seed funding for creating new jobs in Florida (see attached PDF). If your company has had any experience with SBIR grants, we need your voice to explain "how the grant helped my company" as part of the advocacy for this legislation. If you can help, please contact Ed Schons NLT Monday, 8 February or sooner via email to eshons@mail.ucf.edu or phone (407)247-6500 (cell) to express your willingness to help. The greatest impact will be if you can go to Tallahassee next Tuesday afternoon (see below - Ed can provide other details), but you will need to use your own travel funds. If you have a positive SBIR experience to share but cannot get to Tallahassee on this short notice, please do contact Ed to see if a written note might be useful and to get his guidance on how to address it, etc.

Senator Jeremy Ring (D-Margate), proposing that the Senate Select Committee on Florida’s Economy, for which he is Vice Chair, include $10 million for phase 1 matching grants and $2 million for seed funding in its “Jobs for Florida” draft legislation. This is in addition to the commercialization matching grant program already included in section 21 of the draft bill.

The revised proposal will be discussed during the select committee’s next meeting on Tuesday, February 9th from 4 – 6 p.m. in 412 Knott Building. Wendy asks that if you are in Tallahassee that day, it would be wonderful for members of BioFlorida or other supporters in general to attend the meeting and voice their support.

The benefits of fab ownership will increasingly outweigh the disadvantages as component manufacturers meet the challenges of lower cost and higher transmission speeds by pushing design and test complexity back to the chip level, argues Oclaro's Andy Carter.

Fab or Fabless? The question has been asked many times over the last ten years by everyone seeking to make compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices. There is no doubt that the era has passed when the first item on a start-up shopping list was a fabrication facility...but what about companies with well established fabs, such as Oclaro? Are their fabs cash and overhead drains, or are they the key to deliver growth and profitability now that the market is warming up and many component requirements are still differentiated on performance and footprint? The view of the management at Oclaro is that lab ownership offers compelling advantages, and once a certain scale is reached, it is highly differentiating and cost effective. In addition, it acts as a significant barrier to entry for other players..(full article).

So, what is the right answer to the question of "Fab or Fabless?" OIDA and IPCA's upcoming forum "Fabrication Challenges in Optoelectronics" will explore challenges, opportunities, and various approaches in manufacturing.

This forum will expand on the topics discussed at OIDA's 2005 forum: Challenge of InP Photonic Development and the Optical Foundry. We will review what has changed from that workshop and shift the focus of the discussion from one of the "supplier" to examining, in more detail, the challenges and needs from the perspective of the user community; small, cash-poor, innovative start-ups, custom design houses and IDMs (integrated device manufacturers) who may want to take advantage of access to external resources and capabilities.

It is critical to have a better understanding of this perspective in order to further develop the "fabless/foundry" model and to take the opportunity to explore and to understand the strengths of other options.

There are several pre-existing examples (outside of InP photonics) that may be used to benchmark the process and to provide some input to the discussion of evolving the fabless InP photonic device business model.

Perhaps the first and closest example is the evolution of "fabless" silicon photonics businesses and how it aligned with an already established silicon foundry industry. While there are unique challenges that only apply to silicon photonics, there are still many lessons to be learned that may be useful to the III/V photonics world.

A more mature example of a complex fabless/foundry relationship (and an arguably successful business model) that in some aspects mirrors the additional complexities and challenges presented by III/V photonics, is the RF/Analogue industry and its fabless/ foundry business model. Over a number of years, a robust foundry network has been developed to support a diverse design, process and application environment.

Focusing next on the subject of InP photonics, the forum will discuss existing foundries and fabless organizations working in III/V photonics. These organizations may include pure play, photonic IDMs or electronic IDMs selling excess capacity and also those fabless organizations that utilize those resources.
